CNC Press Brake Buying Guide: Tonnage, Tooling and Controls

A CNC press brake should be selected from the parts, materials, tooling, and production route—not from tonnage alone. The correct machine must provide adequate forming force and bending length while also supporting the required daylight, stroke, throat, backgauge motion, crowning, controls, guarding, material handling, and service plan.

Start With the Bending Application

  • Material type, grade, and thickness range.
  • Maximum and routine bend length.
  • Inside radius, bend angle, and forming method.
  • Part depth, flange dimensions, return bends, and box geometry.
  • Part weight and support requirements.
  • Daily volume, batch size, and changeover frequency.
  • Tolerance, inspection method, and rework constraints.

Drive-system terminology varies among manufacturers and models. Compare the actual force delivery, cycle, energy use, maintenance, temperature behavior, control, and application range instead of relying on a label alone. Backgauge and Axis Selection
